To Broadway via Railway!
Q: I would like info on what trains would go from Princeton to the Grand Central Station in NY City.

A: What a wonderful gift!

Your parents need to take the Northeast Corridor Line from Princeton Junction Train Station (PJT) in West Windsor into Penn Station - New York.

Check out the train schedule and fare information here.

Make sure they buy tickets for Penn Station New York as the train station in Newark, NJ is also known as Penn Station (the stop right before Penn Station NY). If they use the ticket machines at the station, I believe the number for Penn Station NY is '000', but definitely check when you get there. The regular round trip excursion fare to NY Penn Station is $13.00 from PJT, or if they start from the Princeton 'Dinky' Station it is $14.00.

They can also buy their tickets on the train but may be charged an extra $3.00/ ticket.

Is the Theater they are going to near Grand Central? The Theater District is just a subway ride/taxi/ great walk (in nice weather) from Penn Station. If they aren't familiar with New York at all I'd suggest a taxi.

For more about taxis visit: NYC Taxi Information Page

If they do want to take the subway, this page might help get you started -- http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/nyct/travel/theater.htm

NJ Transit use to have special packages for all Broadway shows several years ago, but now it looks as though only a few are offering special promotions like 'The Christmas Carol' or 'The Radio City Christmas Spectacular'.

Assuming you didn't find this information already, you can find information on the times available for the show promotions at:

The Christmas Carol
Radio City
Rocky Horror Show (I'm just letting you know)
Jane Eyre

Essentially, your parents would be able to ride the train into NYC for free to these shows.

Another option you might look into, since you mentioned that you are not familiar with NYC, is to do a dinner-theatre package. Most restaurants in the area offer either pre or post event dining and there are a lot of great choices. I suggest the usual www.sidewalk.com or www.nytoday.com. www.broadwayshows.com I think has direct links over to the above nytoday.com so you don't have to search a lot.

I also found this about packages which may or may not be helpful.

I hope this information has been helpful. Have a great holiday.

To Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ
Q: I am going to be moving to the Princeton area in Mercer County. How long should I allow for the morning commute from Princeton to New Brunswick? What is the best route to take? If I sometimes take the train, what kind of parking is available at Princeton Junction Station and at the Princeton "Dinky" station?

A: Thank you for your recent inquiry and an early welcome to Mercer County!

I do the exact reverse commute of yours and I would venture to say about 30-45 minutes depending on where you are going (Rutgers, Douglass, Busch, etc) and if you take Route 27 or Route 1.

For daily parking at Princeton Junction and Princeton, I would suggest you get there early as the lots fill up quickly, especially at Princeton Junction.

For Princeton, contact Connie Hensely @ (609) 258-3157 for monthly parking and for Permit Parking (Administered by Princeton Borough), 609-924-3118. They will also be able to tell you about how much change you would need for the metered daily parking as I believe there are both 9 and 12 hour meters.

Daily parking at Princeton Juction is $3.00.

For Princeton Junction information, contact the West Windsor Parking Authority at: (609) 799-3130.

You can also browse our Park & Ride section to find out more information on Princeton and Princeton Junction parking, as well as Hamilton, which is also an option for you.

I hope this information is helpful. Please let me know if you need additional assistance

My first trip out to NY/Phila Metro I rented a car at the Phila Airport and had no problems finding my way into New Jersey, Princeton and beyond.
There is quite a bit of construction on the I-95 corridor, so if you select this option, please refer to these travel advisory resources:

Check out the TMA website (click on the PA link to check out the I-95 Corridor construction) for more on the construction project or visit the SmarTraveler website.

2. Train Service --

Start by taking SEPTA R1 High Speed Rail Line (Entrance on Pedestrian Bridge)
Get off at the 30th Street Station, and transfer to either the:

A. SEPTA R7 train into Trenton. In Trenton, it is an easy transfer to the NJ Transit Northeast Corridor Train northbound to Princeton Junction Train Station (in West Windsor, NJ). Then take the Princeton Shuttle train (known as the Dinky) over to downtown Princeton Borough. It sound like a lot, but it really isn't too bad in terms of connections; --OR,

B. Take AMTRAK from 30th Street Station to Princeton Junction Train Station then the Princeton Shuttle train over to downtown Princeton. NOTE: AMTRAK into Princeton Junction may not be available depending on the times of your travel.

Once at the Princeton Junction Train Station, you can also take a taxi into Princeton. Taxis are almost always available but could set you back $10-$15 or more just to take you a short distance. If you go to the TMA website page: www.gmtma.org/ww.htm, you will see just how close you are to downtown Princeton Borough. The Dinky service arrives in downtown Princeton Borough about 5 minutes after leaving Princeton Junction.

NJTRANSIT -- 973-762-5100/ www.njtransit.com
AMTRAK -- 800-523-6590/ www.amtrak.com

SEPTA has a decent trip planning website you might try -- just click on 'TransitQuest' on their home page. Because SEPTA services Trenton, you'll be able to plan a trip according to your time requirements from the airport into Trenton and then you will have to switch over to NJ TRANSIT (Of course AMTRAK option eliminates the Trenton transfer) to complete your travel plans.

If you would prefer, feel free to respond with your arrival date/time into Philadelphia/when you need to be in Princeton (approximately where you are going. Keep in mind that the Princeton zipcode encompasses municipalities in three different counties, and I want to make sure that when you say you need to get to Princeton -- that's really where you are going.) and I'll do your trip planning transit options for you.

Good luck with your trip, and if I can be of further assistance please do not hesitate to let me know.

Enjoy New Jersey!
