Our air doesn't look bad, so what's the problem?
The Delaware Valley Region has come a long way in cleaning
up the air. Yet, during the summer, our region still records ozone concentrations above the national standard. If we continue to
violate those standards, both individuals and businesses may be required to spend more on emissions controls.
Three reasons help to explain our region's problems with ground-level ozone.
First, there are simply more of us than ever before, and estimates indicate that the region's population
will grow from 5.2 million in 1990 to 5.8 million by 2020.
Second, we're driving more cars to more places. In 1990, 100 million miles of travel occurred every day; in 2020, more than
130 million miles will be logged each day. This translates into more congestion and delays on the highways.
Last, most of us are in our cars alone. With the majority of car owners on the road sometime between 6 AM and 9 AM --
We're simply overloading the road network!
