The Southern New Jersey Light Rail Transit System
|
|
|
The South Jersey Light Rail Line is a 34 mile passenger line linking Camden to Trenton. Service will begin in Fall, 2003. The line will allow South Jersey residents to connect with the Northeast Corridor Line in Trenton and provide service to the Sovereign Bank Arena. Fares are $1.10 for a one way trip. Monthly passes and transfer packages will be available. Service will operate between 6 A.M. and 10 P.M.
Although it has been studied, there is currently no funding for extending the line from Trenton Train Station to the Capitol Complex.
The preferred alignment for the extension would run along Clinton Avenue and State Street, extending north and then west approximately 1.23 miles from the Trenton Train
Station. Stops would include City Hall, the pedestrian mall and State House.

More about the cars...
The light rail cars feature clean diesel technology, compliant with federal air quality standards, and will run at grade level tracks in the center of the street. The cars will
operate either individually or in two-car consists (~205 feet in length!). Two-car consists would be articulated to facilitate negotiation of tight radius turns. The cars weigh about 115,000 pounds
and travel on standard-gauge , 115 pound rails. An on-board interactive communications system would keep passengers informed of progress along the line and in safe
contact with the operator. Retractable seats would provide room for luggage as well as flexible seating arrangements to accommodate wheelchairs. Cars will also be
equipped with interior bike racks!
