Greater Mercer TMA advised state legislators in our service area in 1999 about the inconsistencies and inequities between federal and state commuter tax incentives.

Commuter tax incentives enacted at the federal level offer tax savings to employers and employees that have not been replicated at the state level in New Jersey.

In addition, there is no mechanism to allow New Jersey state employees to take advantage of the federal tax incentives.

Other states in the region have modified their tax codes to include commuter tax incentive programs and to allow for participation by state employees.
