Incident Management

Incident management (IM) is a coordinated effort among police, fire, EMS, county, state and local transportation
officials to mitigate traffic congestion caused by accidents and incidents on our roadways. What this means for all of us out driving around in Mercer County is that when a major traffic incident
occurs, these organizations coordinate their efforts at the scene and put into action a pre-planned diversion route to get traffic moving again. Greater Mercer TMA took the lead in developing the Incident Management Plan for Mercer County.
This is how we did it...
The diversion routes are a part of a more
proactive approach towards roadway congestion by planning for possible incidents before they happen. Each diversion route map consists of an
approximate incident location, a primary and possible secondary diversion route(s) around the incident, along with valuable information including
where fire hydrants, hospitals, etc., are located in relation to the incident. As traffic is diverted onto the alternate route, it provides a safer
environment for those working at the scene, allows for more efficient removal of the incident, and alleviates traffic congestion by keeping the
traffic flowing.
