The Ozone Action Partnership

Ozone is a complex form of oxygen. In the upper atmosphere it is referred
to as the ozone layer, and it protects our skin from harmful ultraviolet rays. This type of ozone is good for us.
Ozone pollution -- in the air we breathe -- is the problem. Called ground-level ozone, this
pollution forms in the lower atmosphere in warm weather. That's when the sun bakes unburned gases from tailpipe emissions, fuel evaporation and smokestacks to create ozone.
Ozone pollution has been linked to asthma and other health problems, particularly among children and senior citizens.
The good news is that there's something we can do about it.

When ozone levels are predicted to be unheathy, or Code Red, an Ozone Action Day is declared. On those days, you can help us all breathe a little easier by doing the following:

Limit daytime driving by carpooling or using transit for your commute. Ask us about NJ TRANSIT's Ozone Pass program! More information
Refuel after dark
Refrain from using: gasoline mowers, oil based paints or solvents, barbecue lighter fluid
