NJ TRANSIT funds paratransit services in Mercer County for people whose disabilities prevent them from using the existing bus service. Access Link provides curb-to-curb transportation on a next day reservation basis from locations within 3/4 of a mile of existing bus routes. Users must first apply and meet certain eligibility requirements.

Other Special Services on NJ TRANSIT

NJ TRANSIT has lift-equipped and kneeling buses and accessible rail stations. Check bus timetables for trips marked “W” to see which trips use lift-equipped buses. For commuter routes call NJ TRANSIT (at least 24 hours in advance) to schedule a lift-equipped bus, which permits a wheelchair to be brought on board. Kneeling buses enable the front steps to be lowered for people who have difficulty negotiating steps.

Reduced Fare Policy for Seniors and Passengers with Disabilities

Senior Citizens (62 to 64 years of age): are eligible for reduced fares on-board NJ TRANSIT buses and trains during the hours of 9:30 AM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM on weekdays, and all day on weekends and holidays. Simply show the driver/conductor your Reduced Fare Card.

Senior Citizen 65 and older and Passengers with Disabilities: can travel on-board buses and trains at a reduced fare at all times except on trains as noted in the shaded area of the rail timetable (peak commute hours). Simply show the driver your NJ TRANSIT Reduced Fare Card or Medicare Card.

SEPTA offers a variety of accessible services for persons with disabilities and senior citizens. Presently, all suburban county bus routes are accessible via an "on-call" program. Approximately 56% of our city bus fleet is wheelchair accessible and approximately 32% have wheelchair lifts and computerized stop announcements to assist persons with physical, visual and hearing disabilities. By the year 2004 the entire SEPTA city bus fleet will be 100% accessible.

SEPTA also provides accessible service for persons with disabilities who can not use regular public transit service for some or all of their mobility needs, as well as senior citizens 65 years of age and older. UCPA/NJ serves children and adults with temporary or permanent disabilities through job placement, education, family, and transporation programs. Working with NJ TRANSIT, UCPA/NJ developed the Transportation Opportunities Department to assist individuals in determining which form of public transportation is best suited for his/her needs.

Mercer County Transportation Resources to Aide the Disadvantaged and Elderly (T.R.A.D.E)

TRADE provides transportation services to transportation-disadvangtaged Mercer County Residents who are:
  • Senior Citizens (60+)
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Economically disadvantaged

All trips are grouped into the following categories:

  • Subscription: trips to employement, dialysis, nutrition sites, rehabilitation sites, radiation, etc., which are provided on an ongoing basis.
  • Demand Response: trips to doctors' appointments, out-patient clinics, beauty parlors, or shopping, which are provided on an as-needed basis.

How do I schedule a reservation?

  • Call 530-1972, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, up to 14 days prior to the date of your scheduled appointment.
  • Demand Response appointment time slots are available from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
  • Appointment time slots for the Princeton/Hightstown area are available from 11:00 AM - 1:30 PM. Princeton/Hightstown residents can call toll free at (609) 275-2929.
  • Identify yourself and whether you have registered with TRADE. If you are not registered, please be prepared to provide the operator with the following information:
    • Name and Address
    • Home telephone number
    • Date of birth
    • Emergency contact person with phone number
    • Disabilities (wheelchair, cane, etc.)
    • Total family income
    • Total residents in household

Each of the 21 counties in New Jersey provide county-based paratransit service for senior citizens and people with disabilities. NJ TRANSIT assists in the provision of accessible services by the counties and non-profit agencies through the administration of the Casino Revenue Fund Senior Citizens and Disabled Residents Transportation Assistance Program, and Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) Section 5310, 5311, and 5307 Programs.
